Hurricane Michael Update from NWS Jax
The briefing package from the NWS Jax has been posted at:
https://www.weather.gov/media/jax/briefings/nws-jax-briefing.pdf .
Key Points:
– No changes to expectations with monster hurricane Michael.
– Landfalls of major hurricanes are known for producing tornadoes…as was seen with Florence producing numerous tornadoes. Conditions appear favorable for our area, particularly the I-10 corridor northward, later Today and Tonight. Latest observational data indicate that the air mass over us is already fairly unstable, and wind shear is increasing. Later Today, Tornado Watches are likely for our area, given a favorable environment for supercells and tornadoes along the leading rain bands. Closely monitor for likely tornado watches and warnings.
– We expect the greatest rainfall, 3-6 inches with locally higher amounts, along with the threat of flooding, to occur across south-central GA, closer to the track of Michael. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for several of our counties in south-central GA closest to the expected track of Michael.
